Origins of the Snow Monkey

The Japanese snow monkey, also known as the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), is native to Japan and is renowned for its distinctive behavior and habitat.

Japanese folklore says the famous Jigokudani monkeys came down from the mountains and observed humans soaking in the hot springs. They began to copy the behaviour and soon other monkeys joined them. The Jigokudani monkeys never left the hot springs and became the only monkeys in the world known to enjoy bathing in an onsen! Monkey see, monkey do.

Found predominantly in the mountainous regions of Japan, these monkeys have adapted to living in cold, snowy environments, including areas where temperatures can drop well below freezing. The Japanese snow monkey is notable for its thick fur, red face, and a unique cultural practice of bathing in hot springs (onsen) to stay warm during the winter months, particularly in Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture. This behavior has made them a symbol of resilience and adaptation in Japan's challenging climate.

Snow Monkey Sake, a popular sake brand, draws its name and inspiration from these unique animals. This connection is not just a marketing tactic but also a reflection of the sake’s origin and character. Produced in regions where snow monkeys are commonly found, Snow Monkey Sake symbolises purity, resilience, and a connection to the natural environment. The sake's branding often reflects the snowy, serene landscape that is the natural habitat of these monkeys, emphasising freshness and clarity—qualities associated with both the snow monkey and premium sake.
